Would you sell your soul play guitar?

I’ve been holding off from posting this one because of Bass Player Appreciation Week, but I figure it’s been long enough now that we can poke a little fun…

Found this comic at the brilliant blog ‘Pencils at Dawn’ (posted smack in the middle of bass player appreciation week might I add!).

It is interesting that Robert Johnson, the guitarist often seen as the father of modern guitar music, reportedly sold his soul to the devil in order to attain his skills on the guitar.

Everyone needs commitment to master the guitar. I guess RJ was just more commited than the rest of us.

But does that mean that every guitar player influenced by his playing is doomed? They’re playing music effectively created by the devil!

Looks like I’m screwed.

Well, I am not convinced about the Devil’s powers though. Not sure that he does a really good job. As I mentioned in a post I did about this very same issue, RJ’s music didn’t actually come out for listening audiences until many years after his death. In fact, his first actual “record” was not released until 52 years after he died. You would’ve thought that the devil would’ve given him some kind of sweet deal, awesome guitar powers and super star life or something, at least some good record royalties or somethin’. But, I think in his lifetime RJ just kinda was a regular blues guy, as many were back then.

I do also in the post have a picture of a crossroads very much like the one where RJ hooked up with ol’ satan and signed some papers…
