Murphy!
Mum sent me a mysterious text message a couple of months ago.
“Keep the 31st October free… I’ve gotten us all an early Christmas present.”
Huh? That’s ten days after my birthday. Why isn’t it my birthday present?
Logical thinking aside, I quickly did a google search for the date. Presented with far too many options, I had a look on Ticketek instead.
What or who could be coming that may have grabbed their interest?
I suddenly remembered an earlier conversation, in which we were talking about all the different acts and concerts coming. I told here that I’d bought tickets to see Chekov’s The Seagull, with Sir Ian McKellen acting in it. Jealous, she began browsing Ticketek. And mentioned the Crowded House reunion concert.
Surely not.
I checked the dates.
They matched.
I sent back a reply… “Everywhere you go… you always take the weather with you.”
I was right. So amazingly stoked.
Until tonight.
When I checked my exam timetable.
I have a total of one exams this trimestre.
One. And something like three or four possible weeks for it to fall.
Where does it fall? I guess due to Murphy’s Law it can’t really fall anywhere else.
My 17th and 18th Century French Literature Exam is at 9.30 in the morning on the 1st of November.
The next day. In the morning.
Let’s ignore the fact that I’ll be quite tired for it, and I’m probably going to get a lower mark for it because I was rocking out to some Crowded House the night before.
I’m more concerned that the concert I’ve been looking forward to for months now may be dimished in some way because I’ll be stressing about my exam in the morning.
Unimpressed.
(I’m going to try and grease up to the lecturer and see if I can do it a day early… would be very helpful. Maybe they’ll take pity. Thing is, if it was The Seagull I was going to the night before, I’m fairly certain they wouldn’t hesitate. A concert? Not so likely.)
Ben geeks around…
And adds avatars / profile pics to his blog
For you Wordpress.com cats, your profile pic won’t show up. If you want it to show up on mine and countless other non-wp.com blogs, head over to Gravatar.com and register (It’ll take all of a minute) and choose yourself a pic.
You can even use your Wordpress.com profile pic. When it asks to specify the address of your pic, enter the following:
http://wordpress.com/avatar/USERNAME-96.jpg (where your username obviously needs to be replace by your Wordpress username)
Once that’s all done your lovely pic will begin showing up everywhere, and not just over at the .com!
And, whenever you change your pic within Wordpress, sites like mine will be updated too.
Yay.
The Coke Side of Life

Coke. Everyone knows its bad for you. Wouldn’t it suck if it killed you? Or you had to go without water because they wanted to sell it? Scarily enough, Coca-Cola is one of the worst human-rights violators in the world, according to globalpolicy.org.
In India, Coca-Cola extracted 1.5 million liters of deep well water, which they bottled and sold under the names Dasani and BonAqua. The groundwater was severely depleted, affecting thousands of communities with water shortages and destroying agricultural activity. The remaining water became contaminated with high chloride and bacteria levels, leading to scabs, eye problems, and stomach aches in the local population.
Not only do they have no respect for local communities, but their employees get treated no better.
Between 1989 and 2002, eight union leaders from Coca-Cola bottling plants in Colombia were killed after protesting the company’s labor practices. Hundreds of other Coca-Cola workers have been kidnapped, tortured, and detained by paramilitaries who intimidate workers to prevent them from unionizing.
All-in.

I made myself comfortable in the seat. Look around at the others around the table, a collection of all sorts.
I placed my chips in front of me, $1500 worth. Enough to last a while, considering the small blind was only $12.50.
The hand was dealt. I looked at the faces around the table, trying to get a hint of how everyone fared.
I got nothing.
My hand was a King and a Queen, red and black. Not too shabby for a first hand, plenty of potential.
Bidding started.
Moderate bids were made. The first of $25, followed by a raise to $50.
The girl to my right raised.
To $1200.
That was unexpected.
I looked at her. She was wearing a horrid purple hat, with dark glasses hiding her eyes.
Ok, I thought. My hand has some potential. Shes probably bluffing.
“Call.” I placed my chips in the game.
Two others called, teh rest folded but one, who raised to $1600.
I didn’t even have that much!
Still, I wasn’t going to fold now and forfeit that previous $1200 without even seeing the flop.
“All-in.”
How to earn $5000 in one night
They’re very clever really. All I wanted to do was play some poker. Me and Jordan both. Went looking for some kind of way to play it over the nextwork. It would appear that no such way exists.
So, we decided to try one of the many online poker sites, good old pokerroom.com. Nifty little client to download which looks cool while you’re playing, and they even let you play with fake money, $1000 worth per day.
But still, there was no way we could play in the same game, it just wouldn’t let us. Probably some kind of anti-cheating device, seeing as we’re both in the same house, to make sure we aren’t working together or whatever.
So we played seperately.
Within an hour, Jordan was out. No fake money left.
But he wanted to keep playing, and so was tempted to purchase real credits and continue gambling with those.
I don’t think he did, but could never be sure.
By the end of the hour, I had actually made over $5000.
I figure, that’s better than I do in about 4 months, so things are definitely looking up.
I may as well invest a load of money into real credits, and then within a few hours it will be 5x as much.
Of course, that idea ended tonight when I over $3000 (of the fake money) in one game.
I suppose the idea was too good to be true.
But really, I won a lot, Jordan lost a lot, and we both wanted to buy real credits? These guys have a good business plan!
The desire to play poker hasn’t gone yet…
Expect a poker night soon. With real money.
Real chips.
And a physical presence in the room.
